An issue of “site” and contemporary art have a close relationship with the extensive filed of arts resulted from the experimental trials of modern art history. The concept of “site” in the contemporary art indicates the physical location of a work of art. Furthermore, it has developed and suggested new forms of art intervening its context to modern art. Artists of 1990’s, who took over this heritage have been told a series of questions: “What is the meaning of “site”?; “What is the role of “site” in the birth of a work of art?”; And “What is the art forms that these artists produce eventually?” Modern society experiences the space and the site of variety and complex. Terms such as a place, a space, a site, a territory, a region, and topography are related reciprocally building up a spectrum of slightly different levels of meaning. A “site” is very closely connected with a meaning of “move”. Contemporary artists enjoy and live in the freedom of moving/migrating ever than any other historical period. Without discussing “nomadism”, a phenomenon of post modern society, we have been familiar with the concepts of a travel, a movement, a non-settling, and a transferring for a long time. Transferring is possible for us through not only a physical movement, but also a cybernetic path, an Internet. A “site” of physically recognized and stable is the space of “hetero-tropic” where a deviation and a recurrence repeat constantly in the situation that real-time information can be exchanged. In this context, the meaning of a “site” exists as a transferable and free ‘zone’ or ‘territory’, which a place in reality intersects and moves with an imaginative/cybernetic space in non-reality for the artists of 1990’s. Therefore, it will not be very significant to interpret the works of contemporary artists with the conventionally alternative concept of dualism if their works are developed and exhibited out of the museums or galleries. A ‘certain place’ itself will not be an important issue in the modern art forms of 1990’s because a work of art becomes the reality, and the reality is not far away from a work of art. The arts contemporary artists have produced are based on the “a certain place” and started from the “reality.” At the same time, they become “multiple space” where wholly different realities juxtapose and duplicate. We thus repeat to ask ourselves where we are now in this obscure region, which the reality and the non-reality coexist and float together.
