On Porosity

Porosity is one of the material properties. It determines the formal and functional characteristics of a given material. This article proposes to see porosity as an effective concept to analyse and create urban architecture with. The porosity level of a building changes the way the building relates to the surroundings, resulting in various characteristics in terms of form, function, space and overall performance of the building. This article seeks to define porosity as it is applied to buildings and to use it as a guideline in reviewing certain trends in contemporary Korean architecture. It also hopes to illustrate the potential of the idea of porosity as a new standard in architectural urbanism.
