There are lots of art works that could not be comprehended in a traditional artistic notion. Especially, in the case of squartists who act artistic behavior diverting empty spaces of the city into ‘squat’, they demand us that the traditional concept for art, artists and art works should be revised. Squartist is a compound word of sqalt+artist. Since 1980 squartist has been reassembled to designate the artists who reinvigorate ’squat’. Previously, squat, the parent of squartist, had been used for the social meaning from the industrial revolution. We can see Korean example of squartists who are very energetical in Western. They have suggested the new territories of art with combining the situation of Korea with artistic behavior. 〈Mokdong Artistic Center〉, squat of Oasis Project In 2004 is served as a momentum for ‘art works’ accomplished by site and behavior. It was advanced to change and to intervene in the concrete circumstanoes. They brought mass media and law such as social territories over to their artistic parts. That is, they admitted all kinds of artistic behaviour performed by people to be arts. Although it is deferent with a notion of traditional art, it seems in common with Joseph Beuys’s declaration of ‘all the people are artists’ by means of ‘a site for creative manifestation’. For Oasis project, artistic behaviour includes material and immaterial. And it is caused by artists who strive to alter ‘the concept of art’. Like Duchamp who altered artist producing works into a caller, Joseph Beuys expanded creativity which was monopolized by artists exclusively into a broader realm while endowed all the people with artistic positions. International Situationists found artists’ identities as revolutionists in society and squartists discover artists as manifestationist of creativity in the situation where the sites and activities are confronted and where the present time is reconstructed.. As above, the artists’ positions in the contemporary art scene bring about tm changes of identities connected with society organically. The changes of identities which is established by thern3elves have been constructed by practices and put a question to artists’ social statues and roles in basically. The producers of art do not seek their identities in existing ‘arts’ and ‘production’. It means that artists demand us to redefine ‘art’. Consequently, a new definition of art is investigated by examinations on the changed artists’ identities and consideration of new territories of the material/ immaterial artistic area. Although we still do not have a definition for the contemporary arts, we’ll find Oasis and squartist who practice overthrow existing value on the road of reconstructing artistic definitions.
