Bringing together artistic and architectural research by distinguished international practitioners, Curating Architecture, a project based in the Department of Art, Goldsmiths, London, focuses on the relationship between architecture as a strategic and market-dependent aesthetic practice and the complex claims on public and institutional space made by artists and curators as they seek to articulate new and often utopian ideas about the production of space. Over the past Mo years Curating Architecture has hosted a series of professional seminars (all documented at www.gold.ac.uk/ visual-arts/curating-architecture) and produced four new commissions by AMO/Rem Koolhaas & Reinier de Graaf, Ângela Ferreira, Nikolaus Hirsch & Philipp Misselwitz and Walid Raad. This talk will focus on Hirsch & Misselwitz’s work as it bears direct relation to the concept of new institution building (and thinking). Importantly for our concept, Hirsch & Misselwitz used the Curating Architecture commission to develop a proposal for a new kunsthalle that stages the relation between architectural strategy and artistic experimentation. It is thus a project that can be located paradoxically between practicality and utopia - a paradox we are all familiar with when it comes to the discussion of institutional reinvention at both local and transnational levels.
