The Historical Plan of Manfredo Tafuri : Ideology/Institution/Power/Knowledge

Critics have quite different opinions on the critical legacies of Manfredo Tanfuri, the architecture historian. After his death, the polarization of critics were intensified. I believe that the discrepancies in the intellectual world proves that Tanfuri’s studies are always in the center of the historical arguments. He discourages people who try to define his critics as a kind of “-ism” or a “theory of -.” Then, what is the meaning of speaking of him when discussing the issue of Art and Society? To be brief, he thought that art and society are in an separable relationship. Rather than considering architecture in the social dimension, he, more obviously, tried to investigate on the formation and roles of specialist group of architects, and the foundation of the intellectual system of architecture studies. Through all these themes, as a result, he focused on the knowledge system itself which changes responding to the architecture and city in the history. Starting with the opposite opinions on his critical legacies, this essay tries to introduce his life and the people and intellectual world that had influence on him, focusing on the four keyword ; ideology, institution, power, and knowledge.
