Of all Joseon metal drums the oldest work incised sanskrit characters is the metal drum of Fukouji(普光寺) in Tsushima island of Japan presumed between middle and late 15th century. Throughout this work, Geumgu type metal drum known to be disappeared at middle 14th century is turned out to be continued to early Joseon period. Except this work, there is no metal drum of early Joseon period. However, three metal drums of the 17th century shows the transitional process to Joseon metal drum and completion of typical style. The metal drum with inscription Shunzhi the 3rd of Eunhaesa temlple is the exceptional. Because the lotus shaped striking point and cloud and crane design is characteristics of Goryeo style. On the contray the metal drum with inscription Jangcheonsa(障川寺) of Gukcheongsa temple has the typical style of late Joseon period. This work shows simple surface structure, distinction of striking point, five sanskrit characters instead of complicated sanskrit characters in circle. Also simple arabesque style proves the transitional style placed between late Goryeo style and Joseon style. The metal drum of Cheonggoksa temple made in the 17th century by Kim Aerip shows the transition to simple metal drum style in that decorations on the surface was disappeared. That of the 18th century is characterized by the disappeared the distinction of striking point, the reduced sanskrit characters in circle, abbreviated decorations. So three metal drums of the 17th century is the transitional type of late Joseon underlain between Goryeo style and late Joseon style.
