A Study on the Strategies to Increase Korea's Port Competitiveness in Global Logistics

Globalization has changed the structure of the world economy. Shippingㆍport logistics has responded to the challenges arising from the environmental changes of global logistics. To initiate a new strategic planning to be an occupant of the global hub bases is critical for every port in the world. Thus, ports orienting to be a hub-port in the 21st century must be specialized in shippingㆍport logistics and information communications in which globalization has been taking place far and wide. The purpose of this paper is to establish the strategic measures to increase Korea's port competitiveness in global shippingㆍport logistics and adopting innovative and cost-cutting strategies. The research method used in this study accounted for overlapping between attributes, and introduced the HFP(Hierarchical Fuzzy Process) method that is the newest technique applied to social science and strategic logistics policy. The results of this study showed that the competitiveness of Singapore Port was the highest among the ports of East Asia. Derived from the empirical study, this paper attempts to grasp the real port competitiveness in dynamic port activities. The great achievement of this study is to present practical strategies to increase Korea's competitiveness in the rapidly changing environments of global logistics.
