서역에서의 법화신앙 전개

Development of Faith in Lotus-Sutra in Western China - Focusing on the Southern Route of Silk Road and Yangzhou

대승의 신앙형태 가운데 특히 법화신앙은 상당히 이른 시기부터 광범위한 지역에서 성립ㆍ발전된 것으로 추정된다. 법화신앙이라 함은 기본적으로 『법화경』의 내용을 중심으로 한 신앙형태를 말한다. 그런데 초기 불교전파 및 문화적 변용과정에서 가장 빈번하게 등장하고 있는 것이 곧 법화신앙일 것이다. 『법화경』내에서 묘사되어지는 상당부분이 이곳 석굴 내부에서 발견되고 있으며, 시대에 따라 신앙형태를 가늠해볼 수 있는 부분들이 존재하므로 이를 바탕으로 천산남로 상의 법화신앙을 고찰한다. 또한 지금까지 흔히 미록계 경전을 바탕으로 얘기되고 있는 도솔왕생의 문제를 『법화경』에 입각한 미록신앙과의 연관성 문제로 재해석하는 것을 시도해본다. 그리고 이 같은 초기 법화신앙이 지역과 시기 별로 어떤 변화를 가지는가에 대해 문화적 형상화에 입각해 살펴본다. 미륵보살 도상화에서 시대가 흐를수록 점차 이불병좌상이 출현하게 되고, 더불어 경변상도가 나타나게 된다. 그런데 이와 같은 현상은 중국 내부로 들어오면서 나타나는 양상이므로 변화양상을 통해 신앙형태의 발전상을 보며, 이를 통해 신앙체계의 견고성을 더해 나아기는 초기 불교전파 및 당시 교류 상황을 짚어본다. 또한 전파경로 가운데 중국 내륙으로 들어오는 바로 직전 관문인 돈황 등의 지역에서 드러나는 법화신앙을 함께 다룬다. 천산남로에서 보여지는 법화신앙은 교류의 측면에서 접근되어져야만 이해되는 부분이 상당수이다. 이에 대한 비교지역을 현 감숙성 지역으로 한정하며 시기 역시 중국 역사 전개에 있어 수당시대 이전까지로 한정한다. 이로써 전파초기의 신앙형태를 법화신앙에 초점을 맞추어 어떤 변화과정을 거치는지 살펴봄으로써 동아시아 불교의 변용과정의 단면을 유추해볼 수 있으리라 생각된다.

Of the types of faith in Mahāyāna Buddhism, the faith in the Lotus-Sutra is assumed to have been established and developed in wide area from quite early time. The faith in the Lotus-Sutra here basically refers to the type of faith formulated based on the contents of Lotus-Sutra. During the spread of early Buddhism and the appropriation of culture, the faith in Lotus-Sutra appeared most frequently. As considerable parts described in the Lotus-Sutra have been discovered inside the cave and some of them provide clues to estimate the types of faith over time, the paper tries to examine the faith in the Lotus-Sutra on the southern route of Silk Road. The paper will also attempt to reinterpret the issue of reincarnation in paradise, which has been discussed around Sütras about Maitreyanātha, with regard to the Maitreyanātha in Lotus Sūtra. In addition, the paper will also examine how the faith in Lotus-Sutra changed over time, by region from the cultural perspective. Over time, the image of two Buddhas sitting side by side appears gradually from the iconography of Maitreyanātha Bodhisattva and the image of seeing each other as well. As it appeared during the process of penetrating into China, how it changed will show us the state of development in types of faith. Through this we will investigate the spread of early Buddhism and state of exchange of the time. In addition, among various routes through which early Buddhism were spread, we will deal with the faith in Lotus-Sutra found in areas such as Tunhuang, a gateway to inner China. Most of the faith in Lotus-Sutra discovered in the sourthern route of the Silk Road can only be understood when viewed from the perspective of exchange. We will limit the comparison to the area of Gansusheng and to the period preceding Sui and T’ang dynasty.
