Study on Human rights abuses over Merchants in Merchant Tales

This paper is written to study about the merchants in the Korean merchant tales and their human rights abuses. It is obvious that a tale reflects the society and the people’s idea of the time. Thus, it also is true that the merchant tales and the merchants in the tale reflect the way of thoughts and the society of the time. This study starts from the statement and deals with the human rights violation of those merchants. In the chapter of ‘Mechanism of disregard and indignity, the three aspects of aggression are observed. Firstly, the ocular aggression: as the appearance of the merchants implies their social class, the merchants were held in contempt. Secondly, the verbal aggression: the merchants were orally disregarded by euphemism. Thirdly, the behavioral aggression: the merchants suffered the indignity of being falsely accused and actually lost money and/or even their life. The reason why they suffered those agonies is job discrimination. In the chapter of ‘Mindset of False’, ideas of the people in the tales and the transmitters are reviewed. The people’s idea about the merchants is summarized that “Being different is being false”. This conception leads the human rights violation. In this paper studies the human rights issue with the characters in the narrative literature, and the study imparts a meaning to this approach. It also is an interesting task to seek the solution to the issues the human rights and the minorities in the modern society, studying with the literature.
