This article examines the process of Gwacheon-Hanmadang Festival(GHF)'s spatial transformation. GHF is being transformed symbolically and spatially. The original key theme of GHF is Madang play, cultural symbol against political pressure and the social contradictions of the 70's and 80's. As the grand discourse of “democratization” has disintegrated from the beginning of 90s', Madang play is largely overlooked and under performed with the exception of GHF. GHF transformed the symbolic meaning of Madang from resistance to playing. GHF is recognized as the performance art festival presented in the outdoor theater established temporally. The factors of GHF's success and succession are regional support for the festival identifying them and placeness called 'Madang'. Now the perception of Madang is the good place for outdoor performance. Even though the social and regional environments change, regional residents establish a new symbol for the festival on the base of locational characteristics such as 'Maddang'.
