Has the Fraction of Rule-of-Thumb Consumers Changed over Time?

현재 소득에 따라 소비하는 가계의 비율에 대한 변화 추이 연구

본 연구는 미국 시계열 자료를 이용하여, 소비의 소득에 대한 초민감성(Excess sensitivity)이 시간의 흐름에 따라 어떻게 변해왔는지 살펴보고 있다. 이를 위해 내생적인 설명변수가 포함된 가변계수모형을 고려하고, 최근 개발된 추정방법을 사용하여 분석하고 있다. 그 결과, 소비의 소득에 대한 초민감성이 1953년~2006년 기간에 점차적으로 감소하는 것으로 나타났다. 즉, 현재 소득에 따라 소비하는 가계의 비율이 추세적으로 하락했음을 보이고 있다. 금융 중개기관 및 금융시장 발전으로 인한 유동성 제약 완화가 본 연구 결과를 설명할 수 있는 한 요인으로 판단된다.

This paper investigates the time-varying nature of the excess sensitivity of consumption to income. Using a recently proposed estimation method on time-varying parameter models, we have discovered that the excess sensitivity has been gradually decreased over the period of 1953 through 2006 in the US. One potential explanation for this finding is that the gradual developments and improvements in the financial system could have lessened liquidity constraints, such that consumers have become less restricted by their current income level.
