The purpose of this study is to investigate beliefs about Chinese and Japanese learning held by Korean learners of Chinese and Japanese as a foreign language. A total of 216 Korean high school students participated in this study. The Beliefs about Language Learning Inventory (BALLI) (Horwitz, 1987) was used to collect data. The questionnaire items were translated into Korean and handed out to the participants. The questionnaire used 33 items and each item consisted of one belief statement. The participants were asked to answer how strongly they agreed or disagreed with each of the statements. The main findings of this study are as follows. First, unlike learners of Japanese, most of the learners of Chinese responded that learning Chinese linguistic structure such as pronunciation and grammar is difficult. Second, unlike learners of English, many learners of Japanese and Chinese believe that it is not necessary to go abroad for better Japanese or Chinese learning. Third, most of the high school second language learners believe that drill is very important for language learning and that audio visual tools are effective for language learning.
