대학생의 교양영어 학습에 관한 인식과 수업 개선에 대한 연구

A Study on the Learners' Perceptions and Efficiency of General English Program

The purpose of this paper is to investigate university students‘ satisfaction with their general English courses and to suggest how to improve general English program based on their opinions. Participants in the survey were 249 university students and a questionnaire consisted of 31 items concerning students’ overall perceptions of general English. The results are as follows: First, most students have strong interests in general English and recognized that learning English is important and necessary for their future job. Moreover, students were pretty satisfied with both general English courses and teachers. Second, we should increase credit hours of general English courses and reduce class sizes. Third, we need to develop appropriate textbooks and teaching materials to satisfy the needs of students. Fourth, we should restructure the classes according to the students' level of English proficiency and develop placement tests. Fifth, we need more English cafes or English lounges to accommodate more students to speak only English within those areas. Sixth, teachers should also encourage students to participate in the class activities using the Internet, multi-media facilities, etc. and make a constant effort to develop a variety of teaching methods.
