The Digital Addition and Compilation of the Comprehensive Collection of Korean Folklore

The Comprehensive Collection of Korean Folklore is a representative product of collecting and arrangement of fundamental Korean studies materials, which is propelled and published by the Academy of Korean Studies. In 1978, immediately after the Academy was established, national wide field work for collecting the materials had been persued, until 1984 the matreials were recorded and transcribed. In December 1988 the Comprehensive Collection of Korean Folklore was published in 82 volumes. This Collection contains 15,107 folktales, 6,187 folk songs, 376 shaman songs and etc. Then number of infomants is counted as over 4,000. Several projects to the collection has been undertaken to digitalize the analogue data, and some of the results can be accessed via internet at the site of the Korean History On-line. Succeeding the first project, The Digital Addition and Compilation of the Collection has been propelled as one of the Korean Studies strategic projects on a large scale as 900 million won per year for ten year from 2008. As for the digital revision of the Collection, tasks to find the mateirals which are not transcribed and to synchronize the text and sound recordings will be persued. As for the addition of the Collection, field works for collecting folklores in digital form of voices, images and videos of the region where the first project excluded (so such the areas of Korean massive residence as Yianbian China, Japan, Central Asian countries, United States and etc. will be included in the second project) will be persued by 15 fild work teams, and transcribed text and the other materials are compiled into the Korean Folklore Database and serviced via Internet. This second project will produce over 300 volumes of over 60,000 folklores, which would proud of their highest quality in homogeneity and integrity of data.
