The defectors from North Korea who now are living in South Korea realize the sharp difference in the languages of the two Koreas. This difference makes it difficult for them to settle down in the South. But such difficulty is something which can be overcome. Although they find it very difficult to write English and Chinese, they find it less difficult, if at all, in adapting to the spelling, spacing, pronunciation and intonation of standard Korean as spoken and written in the South. Most of the defectors have adapted well to the language used in the South and they continue to easily pick up the language in their daily lives. To leam the language, they often communicate with the people in the South which ironically proves that the differences between languages of North and South have not been as polarized as some Koreans would point out.
