The Characteristics of Hangul as the System of Letter and Writing

The aim of this essay is to make clear the characteristics of Hangul as the system of letter and writing. The contents which was discussed in this essay is as follows. The first characteristics is that the visual forms of letter or writing in Hangul respectively correspond to each articulatory units at each stratum of linguistics, that is, phoneme, syllable, morpheme or word, components of sentence, sentence etc.. The second characteristics of Hangul is that Hangul has two dimensional structure, external dimension for outer form and internal dimension for inner elements of the outer form. Hangul systematically makes the visually fixed forms corresponding to linguistic units by outer form, and shows the inner elements of each linguistic unit by the visual arrangement of the linguistic sub-units which compose the outer form. For this viewpoint, the author thinks that Hangul may be the only system of letter and writing in the world which simultaneously hold in common two characteristics of phonography and ideography which typically considered incompatible.
