The Problem of Cino Character in the New Formation of Literature-The Comparative Study on Kim Tae-Jun and Lu Xun

Kim Tae-Jun’s The History of Cino Character Writings in Korea(『朝鮮漢文學史』) is the first book which investigates the long history of cino character writings, but its evaluation of cino character is strongly negative. Kim suggested that only the writings in Korean letters deserve the name of Korean literature, then repudiated the cino character writings as alien to the common life of Koreans. However, Kim never took the inner criterria of ‘literature’ itself. Kim’s case is the problematic one in the contrast to Lu Xun, a Chinese novelist and critic. Lu Xun wrote the Brief on the History of Chinese Literature(『漢文學史網要』), and gave attention to the mutation of letters, but his interests was in the distiction of the spoken/ the written, and of literary language/everyday language. In the comparison with Lu Xun, Kim’s literary history means the under or the supra status of literature.
