“Romantic love” was the most important theme of Do-hyang Nah’s novels(나도향의 소설), which was discribed as a pivotal point of modem life with art. Precisely, Nah accepted romantic love as a important practice of self-conciousness that was a condition of modernity. But in early novels that described romantic love of intellectual, Nah was faced with a difficulty romantic love was not easily permitted in early 1920’ Chosen society. It was an underlying cause that Nah’s early novels became poor works. Afterwards subject matter of Nah’s novels changed over from the love of intellectual to the love of ordinary people. ‘A mute Sam-ryong-i(벙어리 삼룡이)’ was the most important work at this time that achieved the realistic description of romantic love. In this work, Sam-ryong-i as a lowly man gained success of love in spite of unfavorable conditions of social environment, although he had died. After this novel, the tendency of Nah’s novels changed over one more time to impossibility of romantic love(especially in ‘A water mill(물레방아)’), because he had newly taken the developed recognition that it was carnal desires as human nature and dire poverty due to the process of modernization that interrupted ordinary people to gain romantic love. This tendency was notable in ’Mulberry leaves(뽕)’. As a result, Nah realistically described the life and mental state of ordinary people in early 1920’ Chosen that modernity abnormally had been accomplished under the condition of imperialism, because he did not give up the theme of romantic love.
