The Historic Meaning and Task of the South-North Korean Summit Meeting

This study aims to suggest some historic meaning of the South-North Korean Summit meeting and the national tasks for the meeting including some constructive methods for the successful talks. It also attempt to suggest what the South Korean civil society is supposed to do for the sucess of the meeting. The meeting may be characterized by the self-determined agreement between South an North Korea, the extension of the president Kim Dae Jung’s engagement policy toward North Korea, the result from the structural constraint facing both koreas. The main topic to be discussed is on the national re-unification, peace regime in the Korean peninsular including the withdraw of the U. S. troops in South Korea, cooperation and reconciliation between two Koreas. The desirable approach to each other in the talks is you-first rather than me-first or reciprocity. This article was written with the emphasis that it is high time for the Korean civil society to boldly eradicate the anachronistic Cold War sentiments and concentrate on the efforts for the reunification of Korea. In this regard the North-South Summit is supposed to be a great move toward reunification.
