A Study on the Content Analysis of Political Ideology Education Courses in North Korean Secondary Schools

This study examines the contents of political education currently being conducted in North Korea, intending to reveal the problems in them. The research findings show that the contents of political education in North Korean secondary schools focus on the educational ideology of raising people into the communistic revolutionist who are equipped with independence and creativity. The political education in North Korean secondary schools arms students with Chuche ideology in order to make them into “communistic revolutionist”. Furthermore, it tries to educate students the royalty to the Communistic Party and leader, the socialistic patriotism, and the hostility against Japan and America. Since North Korea integrates politics and education, the political education in secondary schools is performed in every subjects on the whole. Especially it is conducted centering around the four subjects 『the revolutionary conducts of Great leader Kim Il Sung commander-in-chief』, 『the revolutionary history of Great leader Kim Il Sung commander-in-chief』, 『the revolutionary conducts of Dear leader Kim Jung Il chief』, 『the revolutionary history of Dear leader Kim Jung Il chief』. The results of the content analysis of these subjects are the following: In 『the revolutionary conducts of Great leader Kim Il Sung commander-in-chief』, 8.6% of the contents is related with the deification of Kim Il Sung’s family, 48.6% with his fights against Japanese Colonialists and revolutionary conducts, and 48.2% with the disposition of Kim Il Sung. 『The revolutionary history of Great leader Kim Il Sung commander-in-chief』 consists of four chapters focusing on the birth of Kim Il Sung, his growing process, the fights for the liberation, and his leadership. In 『the revolutionary conducts of Dear leader Kim Jung Il chief』, 32.3% of the contents deals with the revolutionary acts of Kim Jung Il, 26.5% with the compliment of Kim Il Sung and Kim Jung Il, 26.5% with the establishment of Chuche ideology, and 14.7% with the beautification of Kim Jung Il’s character. 『The revolutionary history of Dear leader Kim Jung Il chief』mainly treats Chuche ideology. It propagates the fights of Kim Jung Il for the establishment of Chuche ideology and the perfect victory of socialism. This book maily focuses on the citation of his speeches. The above results reveal that the characteristic of political education in North Korea secondary schools is ‘the inspiration of positive modelling’ and ‘the calling attention’. It sets up Kim Il Sung and Kim Jung Il as the positive models, trying to make students follow their ideologies and conducts. By setting up models it endeavors to inspire the high respect for Kim’s family intending the deification. However, the political education of North Korean secondary schools show the following problems: The principles of collectivism, hostility, and Chuche ideology have the possibility of negative influences on the young generation’s value systems. The principle of collectivism produces uniform education impeding the youngsters’ independence and creativity. The principle of hostility forms the revolutionary world view and jingoism in the youths. The principle of Chuche ideology can promote the blind royalty to Kim’s family.
