가구를 예술의 한 부류로 여긴다면 가구형식이 주는 감각상의 유쾌함과 즐거움만 고려해서는 안 된다. 가구는 실용성(實用性)이란 기본적 기능을 구비하고 있는 시대적 관념을 반영하는 매개물(媒介物)이기에 미적형식 창조에 있어서도 힘을 기울여야 한다. 이 밖에 가구는 또 보편적인 사회적 의의를 구비하고 있어 점차 가구의 예술 형식에 대한 의미(意味)와 형태미(形態美)란 원칙에서 큰 영향을 주게 된다. 다시 말하면, 가구는 각 문화권(文化圈) 및 역사단계에서 모든 예술 관념 과 실천원칙을 가지고 있었다.

So to speak, different cultural circles and different historic stages have their own furniture art ideas and practicing principles.
