“손가락에 끼우는 둥근 두 개의 고리”로 설명되는 가락지는 우리나라 고유의 장신구이다. 본 논문을 통하여 서양문물이 쏟아져 들어오던 19세기 후반 근대화 과정에서 우리 전통문화를 보존하기 위한 조정의 노력과 결집력을 명성황후의 가락지로 비춰본다. 명성황후의 가락지에서 다음 세 가지 중요한 의미를 찾아 낼 수 있었다. • 나라를 지키고자 하는 명성황후의 책임감과 의지력을 엿볼 수 있었다. • 우리나라 가락지는 신분에 관계없이 일반화 되어 있었으며, 몸을 치장하는 장식적 기능보다는 가족의 평안과 염원, 기원이 담겨있는 부작(符作)의 기능이 우선 된다. • 가락지는 우리 생활 문화를 대변하는 대표적 문화 아이콘이다. 따라서 물질적 가치로 대변되는 현대 보석, 귀금속산업의 맹점을 보안해 줄 중요한 문화유산으로 연구 되어야 한다.
