규방공예의 현대적 활용가능성 연구

Study on the Modern Application of Boudoir Craft

규방(閨房)이란 사전적으로 부녀자가 거처하는 방이다. 과거 한국 여성들의 사회 활동이 남자들과 달리 자유롭지 못했던 시절， 규방은 옛 조선여인들이 그들의 지위가 높고 낮음 또는 기혼， 미혼에 상관없이 가장 많은 시간을 보냈던 장소이며 그들의 희로애락이 묻어나는 장소였다. 옛 조선여인들은 이러한 사회환경 속에서 그들만의 창의적이며 아름다운 문화를 만들어냈는데 이를 규방문화라 하고 전통시대의 여성문화를 대표하는 말이 되었다. 남성 중심적인 유교문화 속에서 규방문화는 다소 절제되고 소박하며 인간적인 문학과 예술로 성장하였다. 또한 그들이 사용하는 제품들을 직접 만들어 사용하기도 하였는데 이 시기 여성들이 직접 제작한 전통 수공예 생활용품을 규방 공예라 부른다. 현재 남아있는 규방공예품들을 살펴보면 디자인 또는 미술교육이라고는 전혀 받아 본적이 없는 그 시기 여성들의 작품이 놀라울 정도로 아름답고 독창적이며 현대적이어서 감탄이 절로 나오기도 한다. 이러한 작품을 현대의 디자이너들이 자신들의 작품과 제품에 응용하여 좋은 효과를 보는 경우가 많이 있다. 옛 여인들이 만들어낸 그들만의 독특한 아름다움을 현대에 활용하여 좋은 성과를 이루고 있는 예를 바탕으로 규방공예의 현대적 활용가능성을 연구해 보고자 한다.

By definition, a boudoir was a place where women used to live. Historically， unlike men, Korean women were restricted from free social activities. A Boudoir is a place where women spent most of their time regardless of their social class or marital status. It is a both a place of happiness and sorrow. Korean women of the past have created their own unique and beautiful culture in this social environment. It was called a Boudoir Culture. In the male-oriented Confucian culture， the Boudoir Culture has become a rather temperate, human culture and art. Some women also made house-wares for everyday use. These house-wares made by women of the times are called Boudoir Craftwork. The preserved Boudoir Craft work is beautiful， creative and innovative. It is incredible that theses wares were made by women who didn’t receive any design or art education. Furthermore, modern designers have gained successful evaluation by implementing their techniques. By introducing the unique beauty that Korean women of the past have created, this thesis will provide case studies that have gained a positive evaluation for implementation our in modern artwork. This paper aims to examine the beautiful and individuaIistic craftworks of women in past times and study their possibilities of modern application.
