A Study ON BA(把) and BA(把)- Construction in Mandarin Chinese

Ba is among the most commonly used word in Mandarin Chinese, and it helps to form rather unique construction which have beeb topics of numerous research by modern scholars of Chinese linguistics. Lots of research have been conducted on syntactic structure and historical development of the Ba-Construction. Ba was used as a complete verb in the archaic chinese. After the period, its syntactical and morpho-logical features as a verb became gradually weakened. Although grammarians insisted that Ba- construction was used in Taug Dynasty, jiang, and ba characters began to be weakened during Han Dynasty. It is at the age of the Six Dynasties that Yi- Construction was substituted by Ba-construction ; from Tang Dynasty to the present, Ba-construction generally has become used. Linguistic systems are arbitary and subjective products of the human mind when it tries to represent the external world. Speakers of different languages use different systems for their representation of outside world, and their systems all have their own intrinsic logic and can thus be specified or formulated. The basic structure of Ba-construction can be abstracted into the following formulas : NP1 + (X1) +把+ NP2 + (X2) + V + X3. In these formulas, the most prominent semantic feature is perhaps the restriction that the part " V + X3".
