For the last few decades, translation educational institutions have been on the rise worldwide. Korea is no exception. This in turn indicates an increase in the intereat in translation and interpretation and a need for translators and interpreters. Translation teaching has a lot to offer in the age of globalization if it can produce high-quality intercultural mediators (translators and interpreters in a futuristic sence). However, the introduction of translation teaching at university levels in Korean situation has some inherent problems, one of which is the lack of language proficiency on the part of the students. In this paper, a survey was conducted on “Understanding and Practice of Interpretation and Translation” which began as an English-major elective course in the 2nd semester of 2001. The results show that university-level translation teaching has to be done in the way language proficiency should be the main focus followed by translation practice and theory. Specifically, the following suggestions has been made: (1) The establishment of translation/interpretation track throughout the university curricula; (2) The development of general language proficieny at lower levels; (3) The reinforcement of advanced language proficieny at higher levels; (4) Teaching of translation/interpreation methodology through simulated practice; (5) The teaching of translation theory and application of it in practice; (6) The establishment of separate translation and interpretation tracks; (7) The opening of the tracks to the students outside the linguistics and literature fields.
