Sociolinguistics in TESOL

사회언어학은 영어의 어용론, 화용론, 진정성의 중요성과 아울러 이중언어교육의 중요한 한 부분으로 자리잡아왔다. 본 연구는 이러한 사회언어학 문헌의 사회적, 문화적 그리고 상호적 측면의 연구를 통해 언어의 “상호작용”이라는 측면을 부각시킴으로써, 언어와 논의된 이 세 측면이 함께 뒤섞여 있음을 보여준다. 이는 이중언어학습자가 언어사용의 규범을 이해하지 않고서는 그 언어를 습득할 수 없음을 의미하며, 본 연구는 이중언어교수자가 실제 수업에서 이러한 사회언어학의 중요성을 깨달아야 함을 주장한다.

Along with teaching pragmatic, functional, and authentic language uses of the target language, teaching sociolinguistic skills has become one of the crucial areas for second/foreign language learners to study. Through the review of sociolinguistic literature in terms of social, cultural and interactional aspects, the paper demonstrates that the aspects are interwoven with the language by highlighting the “interactiveness” of the language. Because it means that ESL/EFL learners cannot acquire a language without understanding its “social norms of language use,” the paper suggests that the ESL/EFL teachers have to understand the importance of teaching sociolinguistics in practice.
