燕巖 편지의 세 가지 층위에 대하여

The three kinds of Yeonam’s letters

燕巖 朴趾源의 편지는 그의 문집에 실려 있는 書와 尺牘, 그리고 문집에 수록되지 않고 별도로 전하는 簡札 등 세 가지 층위로 나뉜다. 연암의 簡札은 대부분 만년에 창작된 것만 남아 있다. 간찰은 일상 생활의 필요에 의해서 주고받는 편지이며, 문학 예술성이 높지 않다. 그 내용도 거대담론이 아니라, 안부를 묻거나 물건을 청탁하는 등의 지극히 개인적이고 일상적이며 잡다한 생활상의 문제와 관련된 것들이다. 연암의 書는 그의 전 생애에 골고루 걸쳐서 창작된 것이다. 서는 간찰에 비해서 공적인 성격이 강하다. 공적인 문제를 다루므로 글이 논리적 완결성을 갖추게 되고, 설득력 있는 짜임을 갖추게 된다. 의도적인 글쓰기이므로 간찰보다는 문예적 성격이 강하다. 이 서는 간찰과 같은 실용적인 성격이 강하면서도 한편 문예적 성격을 갖추고 있다. 연암 편지의 최대 장점과 미덕은 이 서에 갖추어져 있다. 연암의 尺牘은 30대 초반에 지어진 것으로, 보다 문예취향적인 편지이다. 척독은 간찰과 서의 성격을 공유하고 있는 점이 있다. 척독은 의도적으로 창작하는 문예적 글쓰기이므로, 온갖 문예적 장치나 기법을 사용하게 된다. 따라서 그 글은 중의적이고 함축적이다. 그동안 학계에서는 문예성이 높은 척독만 주목 연구하여 왔다. 연암 편지의 진면목을 살피기 위해서는 펀지의 세 층위를 모두 분석하고, 세 층위의 특징과 관련성을 따져보아야 한다. 본 논문은 이러한 문제의식을 가지고 연암 편지의 세 가지 층위를 함께 거론 분석함으로써 연암 편지의 특징과 문학사적 의의를 究明하였다.

The letters of Yeonam, Park, Jiwon are categorized into three kinds: Seo(書), Cheokdok(尺牘), and Ganchal(簡札). Most of the remaining Ganchal were written in the later years of Yeonam(燕巖). Ganchal are the letters that refer to daily routine. Therefore, they rarely have a high level of literary or artistic aspects. The contents consist of trivial and personal things such as inquiring one’s welfare or asking something. Yeonam’s Seo had been written through his whole life. Seo are more public compared to Ganchal. Seo were dealt with public matters, and the writings were founded on a logical basis and assumptions as well as having a well-organized composition. They are premeditated letters and reveal literary accomplishment compared to Ganchal. Seo has a literal grace as well as a practical element in Ganchal. You can find out the most advantage and merit of Yeonam’s letters in Seo. Chukdok which were written in the early thirties of Yeonam are focused on literature and the arts. The characteristics of Chukdok share the features of Ganchal and Seo. Chukdok are a sort of intentional writings and adopt various literary devices and techniques. Therefore, they take inevitably implication and multiple meanings. The academic circle has just noticed Chukdok with literary aspects and mainly concentrated on the study of Chukdok. The researcher has been acutely aware of the situation and give careful consideration to the issue. All the three kinds of letters should be examined for understanding the true features of Yeonam’s letters. The study would obtain a meaningful and significant implication through analyzing the characteristics of the letters and the relationships between them. This study will examine the three kinds of Yeonam’s letters with detailed analysis and catch the features of the letters and significance of the literary history based on a critical mind.
