퇴계 서간의 문집으로의 정착과정

A Study of the Precess of Sellection of Toegye-gip, focusing in the part of letters of Wolchon Cho-mok

퇴계 이황 서간은 원래 보낸 서간을 그 내용을 고려해서 일정하게 산거하는, 다시 말하면 전편을 제외하거나 아니면 서간 내용 중의 일부를 산거하는 과정을 거쳐서 그의 문집에 실리게 되었다. 그 산거의 과정에서 특히 중시된 것은 내용의 중요도뿐만 아니라, 문집에 수록되는 다른 서간 내용과의 중첩 여부, 그리고 해당 인물과 주고받은 서간 내에서의 일관성 여부 등이었다. 그래서 『퇴계집』이라는 하나의 문집을 접하는 일반 독자들이 서간을 주고받는 두 사람 사이의 사적인 대화, 곧 사신이 아닌 공적인 성격을 가진 ‘글’로 읽을 수 있게 해놓고 있다. 이와 함께 퇴계 이황 서간의 문집으로의 정착과정에서 중요한 것은 『퇴계집』 서권에 수록된 인물들의 편차 문제라고 할 수 있겠다. 『퇴계집』의 경우 그것을 편찬할 때 편집자들이 준용한 『주자대전』의 경우와 달리, 서간을 그것을 받은 인물별로 일차 분류해서 편집 해놓았다. 특히 그중에서 ‘지구’와 ‘문인’에 해당하는 인물들의 경우는 연치가 아닌 학문적인 문제 등 다른 기준에 따라 순서를 정해서 편집해놓았다는 점이다. 그러나 그 기준이 무엇이었는지 현재로서는 명확하지 않다. 이 글에서는 월천 조목의 경우 하나를 들어 그 문제 일단을 밝혀보았지만, 해당인물들의 편집 순서와 관련해서 ‘지구’와 ‘문인’ 전체에 적용된 기준이 과연 무엇인지 밝혀내야 할 것으로 생각한다.

Mungip, a collection of poetry and prose of classical writers, don’t gather his all works. It gathers critical works and deserts remainder. It expurgates unnecessary parts in sellected works, too. This study treats this side of mungip. The central subject is a sellection of letters in Toegye-gip. The central point of expurgation is, needless to say, the importance of contents of letters. But a overlapping between letters and a consistency of letter and receiver is critical point, too. As a result of this process of sellection, readers regard the part of letters in Toegye-gip as a sellection of not private but public ‘letters’. The important point of the precess of sellection is the order between writers in the part of letters in Toegye-gip. Toegye-gip is guided Juja-daejon’ sellection. But the part of letters groups and edits in the order of receivers. Specially, the part of companion and disciple in the part of letters is classiffied not age but other criterions. For example, the subject of philosophy and et cetera. But the criterions is not clear at this time. This study treats the criterions of sellection of letters. But It is limited in the letters of Wolchon Cho-mok. The geneal criterions of the part of companion and disciple of letters in Toegye-gip is the next problem of this study.
