A Development of SA-ASTM Syringe Method for Odor Analysis

Odor is feeled through one of the five sense of human so usually called sensory pollutions. In order to estimate the odor pollution, it is neccesary to calculate the emission rates from sources, but there are not effective methods until now really. Direct olfactory method and ASTM(American society for test materials) syringe method, which is general methods to estimate odor intensity, is recommened. But because these methods justify the odor intensity by olfactory in fact, there are some problems such as panels' mistakes with perception limits and errors at doing dilutions. Therefore more accurate method is needed with increasing the social problems of odor pollution. In this paper, we suggest modified ASTM syringe method. This method adopt a odor sensor’s aids at final judgement with dilutions instead of olfactory sense of human. We named it SA-ASTM(sensor aided ASTM) syringe method. The results of this method’s application to landfill site are as follows : 1) The correlation coefficient between sensor’s value and olfactory value is 0.705, then odor sensor used in this test seems to be effective justifying the integrated odor at field mesurement. 2) The correlation coefficients of odor intensity with dilutions appear to be 0.98, 0.92 at two different odor sources, so we should conclude that SA-ASTM syringe method overcome ASTM syringe method’s limits. 3) By SA-ASTM syringe method, we can calculate the emission rates of odor sources which is suitable to explain the field state. We are willing to conclude that this method must be very useful to estimate the odor pollutions.
