Constraints of Adverbial Positions in English

In this study, I have attempted to indicate some of the deternining factors and restricitons on the adverbial positions in a sentence from morphological, syntactic, semantic and pragmatic points of view. I have also suggesed general operating principles on word-order to control the positions of adverbials in English sentencs. As one of the major determining factors in the position of adverbials, a morphological considerations may be suggested. Depending on the length of adverbials, the shorter it is, the higher its mobility in English. The derivational typology of English adverbs has also shown special relatioship to the mobility of adverbs. The function of {-ly} suffix plays a role not only in showing the word as an adverb but also in maintaining the mobility of the {-ly} adverb. In addition to semantic typology as the most influential factors in adverbial positions, there can be much more general operating rules:closeness principle, inherence principle, indicator principle, information structure principle, neutral zone principle, stress and rhythm principle and others. In conclusion, a lucid description of the placement of adverbials should be based on the principles that underlie the organization of English surface structure. This is a difficult task because of a complicated network of principles above.
