A Study on the Improvement of Sedimentation Process in Small and Medium Sized Water Treatment Facility

The existing water treatment process is long-lasted in Korea, accordingly there is a tendency to accept the conventional operation method as it stands. There are many cases which introducing foreign research results or facility designing guideline into the domestic intact, set it up to operate. Consequently, some facilities brought about useless due to the operational method in regard to automatic syatem. So it is needed to draw up a plan for diagnosis of the facility and to bring up the improvement of it for the sake of effective operation. In particular, the small and medium sized water treatment facility whose waterworks population less than 100,000 or having the capacity of water supply below 20,000 ㎥/d commands an overwhelming majority among the operating facilities by the lacal autonomous entities. The ratio of those occupies 91% of all 577 spots. Thereupon I selected the medium sized water treatment facility which is operated by the county unit and studied how to improve the sedimentation basin among the water clarification process. Sedimentation is broadly defined as the separation of a suspension into a clarified fluid and a more concentrated suspension. The type applied to sedimentation basin is the horizontal rectangular, which is simple to operate and adapt easily to the installation of high-rate settler modules. The term high-rate settler refers to any small sized inclined tubes or tilted parallel plates which permit effective gravitation settling of suspended solids within the modules. In this research, I focused on the tilted parallel plates as an option of settling module to review.
