The Historiography of the British Empire and Global History

이 논문은 근래 영제국사 서술의 중요한 성과를 소개하고 이들 연구 성과가 지구사적 맥락에서 어떤 중요성을 갖는지를 살피는 데 목적을 둔다. 근래 영제국의 역사에서 나타난 중요한 개념 또는 이론으로는 신사적 자본주의, 장식주의, 네트워크론 등을 들 수 있다. 신사적 자본주의는 제국 팽창이 금융자본을 포함한 신사적 자본가에 토대를 두고 있다는 점을 알려준다. 장식주의는 영제국에서 중심과 주변이 일반적인 지배관계로 맺어져 있다기보다 유사한 위계구조에 바탕을 둔 사회들의 병렬적 구조의 특징을 지니고 있다고 본다. 이들 사회사적 개념을 통해 근래 역사가들은 영국, 백인자치령 및 인도를 비롯한 주요 식민지들이 네트워크, 즉 정치, 경제, 문화적 연결망으로 구성되었다는 점을 강조한다. 영국사는 제국사와 내국사의 경계를 넘어 통합적으로 연구될 필요가 있다. 특히 근대 이후 역사적 변화를 지구적 맥락에서 접근할 경우 영제국의 역사는 역사해석의 풍부한 자료를 제공할 수 있다. 영국 기원을 가진 제도, 문화, 관습이 각 지역에서 전파되고 변용되는 과정을 탐색하고, 산업화와 제국주의 등 근대성의 표지들의 변화 경로를 살핌으로써 지구사에 대한 이해를 심화할 수 있는 것이다.

This paper focuses on introducing the recent research trend of imperial history and examining these researches relation with the studies of global history. In the field of imperial history are there three key concepts in which historians have been interested in Britain: gentlemanly capitalism, ornamentalism and the British Empire as a global network. Gentlemanly capitalism let us know the fact that the British Empire could be expanded with the help of the so-called gentlemanly capitalists covering the financial capitalists in the City. The concept of ornamentalism is deeply related to the interpretation that the empire was based not on the center's rule to the periphery, but on the similar social structure initiated by the common social hierarchy among Britain, white settlements and other colonies. According to these social historical concepts, historians emphasize that the center and the periphery formed the networks in politics, economy and culture. Now British history should be studied beyond the boundary between domestic history and imperial history. When we approach the historical changes after the modern age in the perspective of global dimension, from British history we can pick out the affluent sources. It is possible to inspect the courses that many institutions, cultures and rules originated from Britain were imported and changed in other regions, and to research the changes of the modernity marks such as industrialization, imperialism and urbanization. This would enable us to understand global history more deeply.
