사이버 공간에서의 의제설정 기능 탐색

Exploring the Agenda-Setting function in Cyberspace

본 연구는 컴퓨터 매개 통신(computer-mediated communication)을 통해 구성된 사이버공간 내에서 작동하는 의제설정 기능에 대한 탐색적 연구를 시도하였다. 이 연구는 미국의 9.11 테러와 관련된 웹 사이트를 수집한 미국 국회 웹사이트 아카이브에 저장된 웹 사이트간의 하이퍼링크(hyperlink)의 패턴을 분석하고 해당 웹 사이트와 관련 블로그의 텍스트를 수집, 분석하였다. SocScibot, Colink, Pajek 등의 네트워크 분석 소프트웨어를 사용하여 사이버 공간상의 이슈네트워크를 판별하고 이러한 이슈네트워크 내의 주제별로 상대적으로 높은 응집력을 가지고 연결된 웹 사이트들의 연결 밀도와 이러한 웹 사이트들의 군집들의 크기를 측정하였다. 내용분석을 위하여 VBPro, Webivore 등의 내용분석 소프트웨어를 이용하여 각 분석대상인 이슈네트워크와 소군집이 주로 다루는 의제를 분석하고 이에 대응하는 블로거(blogger)들의 의제들을 분석하여 미디어 의제와 공공의제들을 판별 하였다. 분석 결과, 가상 공간 내 이슈 네트워크의 변화를 관찰하고 이슈별로 네트워크를 구분하였다, 하지만, 구분된 이슈 네트워크의 내용분석은 분석 가능한 형태로 나타나지 않았다. 이 연구는 연구대상 웹사이트와 블로그(blog)의 내용분석의 시기문제 등의 한계로 원하는 수준의 실증적 자료를 제시하는 면에서는 제한적이지만. 새로운 커뮤니케이션 현상을 연구에 사용할 수 있는 대안적인 연구 설계 방법을 이론적으로 제시하고 실증적으로 시행했다는 점을 가장 큰 의의라고 할 수 있다.

Investigating the agenda-setting function of Computer-Mediated Communication (CMC), this study conducted an exploratory research using several types of computer software. This study analyzed the patterns of hyperlinks among the web sites carrying information related to the September 11 attacks. Such network analysis program as SocScibot, Colink, and Pajek were employed to identify issue network in cyberspace. VBPro and Webivore, content analysis programs, identified media agendas and public agendas by examining the texts of the web sites and related blogs. As the result, several issue networks in cyberspace were identified but the content of each issue network did not reflect the development of the issue networks in the study. The exploratory effort produced some useful knowledge to justify alternative researc methods to assess new communication phenomena in cyberspace. This study suggested the technical feasibility of an alternative research approach, which employs a series of computer programs. this study built meaningful grounds for future research to investigate the new media communication .
