A Study on the Wearing Conditions of Nurse Uniforms - Focusing on University Hospital in Gwangju

The purpose of this study is to offer preliminary data and improvement direction for desirable a nurse's uniform to perform their work successfully. It examined the statue of wearing nurses uniform and found the problem. The survey was conducted at 5 university hospitals in Gwangju Metropolitan City. The results are as follow. First, the results of this study identified that all those who were polled were female and the respondent's age was especially high in persons over 35. Married and single person had similar ratios and the most of them were college and university graduate. More than half of them were engaged in the reception desk and were positioned as a nurse having a minimum of ten years' experience. Second, the most of uniform's style were princess-style top and pants mostly. Most of them put on straight-style pants and didn't wear a skirt. Especially shirt collar, short sleeves, central meeting style button was more common but not back meeting style. The white color had the largest number of uniforms, followed red and purple. Result also revealed that the uniform's color was mostly warm color such as red and purple. The most uniform's pattern was emblem of hospital followed striped, floral and dotted. More than half of them changed their uniform every four years and most of them decided their size by measuring individually. Third, result of the satisfaction investigation on the function of uniform for movement, the respondents was not satisfied with their uniform. Finally, this study explored the satisfaction for uniform as its components including aesthetic appreciation, functionality and symbolism. It showed that the respondents were only satisfied with the symbolism but not aesthetic appreciation and functionality.
