자유 변이의 공시론과 통시론

Synchronic and diachronic approaches to free variations

이 논문은 소신애(2009, 음운론적 변이와 변화의 상관성: 함북 육진 방언을 중심으로, 太學社)에 대한 서평 논문이다. 소신애(2009)는 함북 육진 방언을 구사하는 노년층, 중년층, 청년층으로부터 채록한 다채로운 자유 변이를 면밀히 관찰하고, 이를‘교체 지배 변이’와 ‘기저형 지배 변이’로 나누어 제약 기반의 공시 문법 내에서 기술하고 있다. 그러나 공시론적 기술 도구인 교체나 규칙 등의 개념을 다소 확대하여 사용하였다는 문제점을 안고 있다. 자유 변이가 공시태에 존재하는 것임은 분명하지만, 그것은 공시론적 연구의 대상일 수도 있고 통시론적 연구의 대상일 수도 있다. 공시론적 연구 대상으로서의 자유 변이는 그것이 모든 형태소에서 일어나는 음소 변이라면 음운 규칙으로 기술할 수 있지만, 특정한 형태소에서 일어나는 자유변이라면 그것은 규칙으로 기술되어서는 안 된다.

This thesis reviews Shin-ae So(2009, The relatedness of phonological variation and change, Thaehaksa). So(2009)closely observes many kinds of free variations from old age, middle age and youth speaking Yukjin dialect of Hamgyeongbukdo, and makes a synchronic description under the constraint-governed theory dividing them into ‘alternation governed variation’ and ‘underlying form governed variation’. But she has problems using some descriptive tools of synchrony with their enlarged concepts. It is clear that free variation does exist in the synchrony but it can either be a subject of synchronic study or a subject of diachronic study. Free variations, as a subject of synchronic study, can be described using phonological rules if and only if they happen through all the morphemes. On the other hand if they occur in some morphemic conditions only, they should not be described using phonological rules.
