본 연구는 싱가포르의 교육과 다문화교육의 양상을 천착하는데 목적이 있다. 싱가포르 교육은 ① 능력주의, ② 도구주의, ③ 엘리트 교육의 특징을 나타내고 있다. 이는 국가와 사회 발전을 핵심 목적으로 하는 통치 문화에서 영향 받았을 것으로 판단된다. 같은 맥락에서 다문화교육은 문화적 다양성을 허용하고 존중하지만, 이는 거시적으로 국가와 사회 발전에 귀결되어야 한다는 전제를 갖고 있다. 기존의 유럽이나 미국과 구별되는 다문화 사회를 형성하고 있는 싱가포르는 우리의 다문화교육에 의미 있는 시사점을 주고 있다. 통합과 다양성을 양 극단으로 놓을때, 싱가포르는 국가 통합에 강조점을 두는 다문화교육의 특성을 보이고 있다. 배려, 다양성, 유연성과 같은 다원주의적 다문화교육의 요소들은, 거시적으로 국가 발전과 사회 통합이라는 상위 목표 달성을 위한 과정일 수 있다는 것이다.
