국적별 재외동포에 대한 초등학생의 인식 분석

Elementary School Students` Perception About Korean Diaspora

한국은 세계적으로 대표적인 디아스포라(Diaspora)의 나라로서, 2011년 현재 재외동포의 수가 720만 명에 이르고 있다. 재외동포들의 삶은 다문화 교육의 살아있는 표본이다. 한국이 진정한 다문화 사회로 정착하고, 한국에 거주하는 타민족·타문화 사람들을 좀 더 잘 이해하기 위해서는 먼저, 재외동포들의 이민 역사와, 그들이 외국인으로서 겪었던 사회적 소외감·고통·차별과 편견으로부터 받은 상처에 대한 이해와 그들이 모국에 돌아왔을 때 겪는 또 다른 종류의 문화적, 심리적인 소외감과 차별, 편견에 대한 연구가 도움이 될 것이다. 본 연구에서는 학생들의 인구·사회적 요인, 재외동포에 대한 직·간접적 접촉 경험 등을 다양화하여 표본 추출한 서울지역 초등학교 고학년 학생 300명을 대상으로 재외동포 중 그 수가 가장 많은 재중, 재미, 재일, 재러 동포에 대한 인식을 설문지법으로 조사하고, 그들에 대한인식 차이에 영향을 준 요소를 분석하였다. 그 결과, 초등학생들은 재외동포에 대한 수업을 받은 경험이 거의 없었고, 재외동포의 국적에 따라 그들을 인식하는 정도(인지도, 호감도, 친밀도)의 차이가 크다는 결과가 도출되었다. 이러한 연구 결과에 영향을 미치는 요인은 역사적, 사회적, 정치적, 개인적 요인등 매우 다양하고 복합적으로 연결 되어있다. 본 연구를 통해 학생들이 재외동포의 국적에 따라 인식하는 양상이 매우 다르며, 이러한 태도의 상이성은 재외동포가 형성된 역사, 한국인들이 인종이나 종족을 바라보는 편견이 형성된 역사적 배경, 재외동포를 대하는 사회적, 문화적, 정치적 태도, 대중매체와 인터넷, 교사와 학부모, 개인의 정의적 태도 등이 복합적으로 영향을 미치고 있음을 확인하였다. 본 연구를 통해 다문화교육에서 상대적으로 간과되어진 ‘한민족 디아스포라’에 대한 ‘연구가 심도 있게 이루어져, 재외동포에 대한 인식 차이 해소를 위한 교육적인 해결책을 찾고, 더 나아가 학생들의 글로벌 시민 역량을 키워 나가는 데 많은 교육적인 기초자료를 제공해야 할 필요성이 제기된다.

As Korea moves toward a multi-cultural society, the Korean Diaspora is expanding rapidly. However, Koreans' perception about Korean immigrants varies significantly depending on their nationalities, and accumulating evidence suggests that Korean immigrants experience situations in their lives in Korea that they interpret as discriminatory. Therefore, this study seeks to help fill this gap by examining perceptions of discrimination or prejudice of Koreans towards Korean diaspora, especially focusing on 4 different groups of Korean Chinese, Korean American, Korean Japanese, Korean Russian, since their numbers are significant. Considering students' individual⋅ social⋅cultural background, 300 elementary students were used as participants. They were asked to complete an anonymous questionnaire including awareness, feelings, familiarities, attitude towards four different Korean immigrants` groups assessing their prejudice, bias, stereotype and feelings towards them. The findings and implications of this study are as follows: Firstly, it is observed that elementary school students had little experience of having lessons about Korean diaspora.
