다문화 동화에 나타난 상호 이해의 양상

Modes of Mutual Understanding Represented in Multicultural Stories for Children

본 연구는 최근 사회적 이슈로 떠오른 다문화 현상이 다문화 동화에서 어떤 양상으로 나타나는지 알아보고 시사점을 얻는 데 목적이 있다. 이를 위해 2003년부터 2010년까지 다문화 현상을 직접적인 소재로 하여 출판된 다문화 동화 20권, 38편의 이야기 속에 전개되어 있는 갈등의 요소 및 해결 방식을 중심으로 상호 이해의 양상을 분석하였다. 등장인물의 유형은 크게 한국인과 이주노동자, 국제결혼이주여성, 그들의 2세이다. 갈등의 유형은 정체성의 혼란, 가정 내 갈등, 이웃과의 갈등, 학교에서의 갈등, 직장에서의 갈등, 사회와의 갈등으로, 문제 해결 방식은 능동적 해결, 수동적 해결, 절충적 해결로 나누었다. 연구결과, 첫째, 다문화 동화에 나타나는 한국인은 전형적으로 착한 한국인과 나쁜 한국인으로 이분화되어 나타나는데 사회에 만연되어 있는 그릇된 인식에 대한 위험성을 지적하고, 변화의 필요성을 제기하고 있다. 둘째, 다문화 동화에 나타나는 이주노동자와 국제결혼이주여성, 그들의 2세는 모국의 정체성과 전통을 유지하면서 새로운 주류사회와의 문화와도 긍정적 관계를 유지하는 통합 유형, 모국문화의 가치를 유지하지 못하고 주류사회 문화에 대해서만 관계형성을 추구하는 동화유형, 모국의 문화적 가치와 정체성은 강하게 유지하지만 새로운 주류사회의 문화에 적응하지 못하고 받아들이려고도 하지 않는 분리 유형, 모국 문화 유지와 주류사회 문화와의 관계형성 모두에 어려움을 겪는 주변화 유형으로 나누어 볼 수 있다. 셋째, 다문화 동화에 나타난 갈등의 유형은 정체성의 혼란, 가정 내 갈등, 이웃과의 갈등, 학교에서의 갈등, 직장에서의 갈등, 사회와의 갈등으로 나타난다. 넷째, 다문화 동화에 나타는 문제해결 방식은 한국사회에서 이주노동자와 국제결혼이주 여성, 그들의 2세가 타자이며 사회적 약자로 여겨지기 때문에 수동적 해결의 양상이 많았는데 특히 이주노동자의 문제가 어린 아이들을 통해서 해결되는 양상은 이들의 사회적 위치가 어린아이보다 무기력하게 비춰지고 있음으로 해석될 수 있다. 다섯째, 다문화 동화에서 이주노동자와 국제결혼이주여성, 그들의 2세가 겪는 갈등의 대부분은 사회에서 경험하는 편견 및 차별로 인해 야기되며, 그들이 경험하는 갈등의 유형은 특별하게 차이가 나지 않는다. 그러나 문제 해결 방식에서 통합유형의 경우 능동적 해결 및 절충적 해결의 빈도가 다른 세 유형에 비해 높은 것을 볼 수 있다. 동화유형의 경우 절충적 해결의 빈도가 높았다.

The purpose of this research is to see how the multicultural phenomenon - which becomes one of important social issues - plays out in the multicultural stories and to get some implications from it. In order for that, the aspects of mutual understandings in the multicultural stories are analyzed in light of the elements of conflicts and the problem-solving processes. The subjects of this analysis are 20 children’s books and stories on multicultural issues published during 2003 to 2010. And the main discussions in this research are as follows. First, The two different types of Koreans illustrated in those multicultural stories; the Good and the Bad. Second, three types of Migrant workers, Foreign brides and their next generation are illustrated in the multicultural stories; integration type, assimilation type, separation type, marginalisation type. Third, the types of conflicts presented in the multicultural stories are; Identity confusion, Conflicts among family members, Conflicts with neighbours, Conflicts in Working place and Conflicts with the society. Fourth, the problem-solving process presented in the multicultural stories is quite passive ones for most of the conflicts arise from prejudices and disregards toward them. Fifth, the conflicts facing Migrant workers, Foreign brides and their next generation in the multicultural stories mostly generated by the Bad Koreans who have prejudices and act on those prejudices. There are no such distinct differences in the types of conflicts that Migrant workers, Foreign brides and their next generation experience. As for the problem-solving processes, however, in the case of integration type, the prevalence of so called ‘Proactive solution’ and ‘Compromising solution’ is higher than the other types. Regarding assimilation type,‘Compromising solution’ is salient.
