도시체계 종주성 이론의 몇 가지 문제점에 대한 분석

Analysis on Several Problems in Urban Primacy Theory: An Attempt to Understand South Korean Case

이 연구는 도시종주성 관련 이론들이 각각의 상이성에도 불구하고 경제발전 수준과 도시종주성을 연결시키는 가정과 도시종주성의 각기 다른 차원(예를 들어, 인구·부·기능)이 같은 정도로 도시에 존재한다는 비례성의 가정을 가지고 있다. 방법론적인 측면에서는 도시권역과 행정구역이라는 경계의 문제와 기능성 측정의 어려움을 지적하였다. 이러한 가정과 방법론은 실제 상호 연결되어 이론과 부합하는 현상의 편이적 선택이라는 문제를 가져왔다. 이러한 문제점은 학문적 으로나 정책적으로 매우 중요하며, 거주민들의 실제 생활에 직접적인 영향을 미친다.

Urban researchers tend to view urban primacy as primarily shaped by economic forces. Also, they tend to assume that the distribution of power, population, and wealth go hand in hand. In addition to these assumptions, this paper deals with the issue of measurement such as the choice between “city proper” and “urban agglomeration.” The above factors contribute to urbanists’ “selective cognition” leading scholars to embrace only the facts that fit well with their theoretical inclination. The matters mentioned in the paper is important not only in academia but also in everyday lives of residents.
