Children’s Self-Efficacy and Social Competence

The purposes of this study were to examine 1) the effect of the socio-demographic variables (sex of the child, number of the siblings, socioeconomic status of the family, maternal employment) on children’s social competence: 2) the effect of children’s self-efficacy on their social competence. The subjects were 202 boys and girls from 4,5th grade of elementary school in Kwang-ju. The inventories were consisted of socio-demographic variables, the self-efficacy scale, and the social competence scale. For data analysis, Frequency, Cronbach’α were calculated and GLM ANOVA, ANCOVA, Duncan’s test were conducted. The main results were as followings: 1. Among the socio-demographic variables, the SES of the family has the significant effect on the children’s social competence. When the SES of the family was higher, children’s social competence was higher. 2. It was found that children’s self-efficacy has the significant effect on their social competence. When the self-efficacy was higher, children’s social competence was higher.
