Effect of Chitosan Treatment on the Dyeability of Cotton and Cotton Blend Fabrics

Cotton and polyester/cotton(P/C) blend fabrics were treated with chitosan solution. The effect of chitosan concentration and degree of deacetylation of chitosan on the dye uptake, and curing effect on the colorfastness to laundering were examined. Physical properties including wrinkle recovery angle and stiffness were also measured. The results of this study were as follows : 1. Fabrics treated with chitosan showed lower wrinkle recovery angle and stiffer handle than untreated. 2. Dye uptake increased with the increase in the treatment concentration of chitosan. 3. Degree of deacetylation did not improve dye uptake as much as treatment concentration. 4. Curing did not affect dye uptake and colorfastness to laundering.
