The purpose of this study is to explore the domestic space usage and domestic household behavioral patterns in Belgium, and then to compare them with those found in South Korea. Data for this study was collected by questionnaires mailed to 133 staff members, both academic and administrative, working at The Free University of Brussels, a university serving the Dutch speaking community in Belgium. The factor analysis and percentage distribution was used in analyzing the data. The major findings of the study can be summarized as follows: First, the typical activities in the living/dining room were examined and grouped into four factors: entertaining and family interaction, eating, private affairs and housework. The representative activities in the kitchen were described as food preparation, eating, and arranging clothes. In the master bedroom, three factors - relaxing and watching T.V., sleeping and getting dressed, and arranging clothes were isolated and classified. Second, the living room in Korea tends to be used in a more versatile way than the living/dining room in Belgium. These research findings provide interesting and pertinent information for understanding the cultural differences in space usage patterns between the two cultures of Belgium and south Korea.
