Physical Properties and Dyeability of P/C Blend Fabrics Treated with NaOH/Chitosan

Polyester/Cotton(P/C) blend fabrics were pretreated with NaOH solution at various concentration and time, and then treated with chitosan solution for level dyeing. The effect of NaOH pretreatment condition and chitosan concentration on dye uptake, and the curing effect on colorfastness to laundering were examined. Physical properties changes of fabrics treated were also measured. And the morphological changes were investigated by SEM. The results obtained were as follows : 1. As the concentration of NaOH solution and the treatment time increased, weight loss and softness were increased due to the decrease in thickness and stiffness. 2. By treating the fabric with chitosan solution, the stiffness of fabrics was increased and the breaking strength retention was significantly recovered. 3. Dye adsorption was increased and colorfastness to laundering was decreased with the increase of chitosan concentration. 4. The level dyeing properties with chitosan treated P/C fabrics for direct dye was improved by NaOH pretreatment. 5. Colorfastness to laundering was positively influenced by curing.
