Extraction and UV/Vis Spectroscopy of Colorants of Gromwell

Gromwell colorants were extracted with aqueous nonionic surfactant solution. Effect of extraction conditions including nonionic surfactant concentration, time and temperature was investigated. Extraction colorants were freeze-dried and the powder obtained was analyzed by FT-IR. The results of this study were as follows: 1. Optimum extraction conditions obtained were 5% nonionic surfactant conc., 60℃ and 180 min. 2. With the increase of pH. bathochromic shift of λ max appeared and color of extracts was changed from red to blue. 3. Powder colorants have phenolic hydroxyl group, carbonyl group and methyl group etc. in the structure.
