Situational Impression on Body Exposing Clothing

The purposes of this study were to investigate the impressions of male university students on the four types of body exposing clothing according to 1) situations and exposed body parts, 2) demensions of impression formation, and 3) perceiver’s characteristics. The situational impressions of body exposing clothing according to whether the wearer is unfamilar girl or perceiver’s lover and the acceptability of body exposure of perceiver’s lover was also investigated. The stimuli of the study were four photograpies of a female model wearing body exposing clothing manipulated by exposed body parts as shoulders, bust, legs, and trunk. The hair style and the posture of the model were maintained consistent. The 32 pairs of bipolar adjectives were used to rate the impression of the model. The questionnaire was administrated to 400 males attending Chonnam National University from Septemeber 22 to October 2, 1996. Data from 320 respondents were analyzed using Frequency, T-test. Factor analysis, and ANOVA. Results were as follows: 1. The impression score on body exposing clothing in campus situation was significantly lower than in date situation(p＜.001). According to body parts, the impression score on legs was highest in campus situaton and impression score on bust was highest in date situation. 2. The score of modest demension of impression was significantly high in date situation(p＜.001). 3. The score of impression was lower when the perceiver had sisters than when the perceiver had not sisters in both situation(p＜.05), the impression score of modest dimension was lower when the perceiver had sisters than when the perceiver had not sisters(p＜.05), and the impression score on bust exposure and legs exposure were lower when the perceiver had sisters(p＜.05). 4. The impression score on unfamiliar girl wearing body exposing clothing was higher in date situation than in campus situation(p＜001). The impression score on unfamiliar girl was higher than the score on perceiver’s lover in date situation(p＜.001). The acceptability of body exposure of the perceiver’s lover was high on shoulders, legs, bust, trunk, in orders.
