A Review of Characteristics of Deconstructivism in the Works of Jean-Paul Gaultier

The purpose of this study was to analyze the characteristics of deconstructivism found on the works of Jean-Paul Gaultier as a outstanding designer in the fashion world. They were classified into four types: Différance, Inter-meaning, Inter-textuality, Decomposition. First, Differance was denoted the one which was composed of factors contradictory in time and space simultaneously like clothes of past, present and future. Cyber look, Retro look, Punk look and Poor look. Second, Inter-meaning was denoted that the text and it’s internal factors didn’t show itself clearly and independently but means a new concept by responding each other reciprocally. This was found in the ways of wearing and use in the works of Gaultier. Third, Inter-textuality meant a neutral or compromising products given birth by communicating with different characters of textuality, like a Unisex mode in Gaultier’s works. Fourth, Decomposition meant creating a work of reconstruction by analysing the text imaginally with denying about unified integrity. This is shown Infra-style and laceless-style in Gaultier’s works. Gaultier was the most representative designer showing deconstructivism whose creativity might lead the 21 century’s design world.
