Research on the Consciousness of the Mourning Garments in Gwangju Area

Today limitation of home space, split of family, and busy life style make Funeral Rites done by modern Funeral Services. Procedures of Funeral Rites have been simplified and its meaning lost. This research shows how contemporaries think of Mourning Garments and proposes methods to preserve traditional Mourning Garments. According to this research, they don’t appreciate the value of Mourning Garments and Mourning Garments get simplified. Especially the younger and the female rather than the male don’t. It proves that the young hardly experience mourning culture and the Family Rite has performed centering around the male. Today as ceremonies are specialized, the number of modern Funeral Services gets higher. It is time to preserve traditions of Mourning Garments. Now this Research proposes several methods considering people’s way of thinking of Mourning Garments and Funeral Rites. First, it is necessary to re-build the Family Rite to understand Funeral Rites. Second, public bodies should supply chances and space to train traditional cultures. Third, people need to rediscover value of Funeral Rites and workers in Funeral Services should be professional. Forth, the manufacturer should make the Standard Size and subdivide size: Small, Medium, and Large. Fifth, price of hemp cloth should be reduced by mass production. It is necessary to train producers and for public bodies to support.
