Determining factors of children’s peer victimization

The purpose of this research was to investigate relative importance of various variables, which include maternal behaviors(authoritarian control, overprotection, affection), children’ self-esteem and school achievement and sex variables in influencing peer victimization of children. A sample of 439 5th grade elementary school boys and girls in Kwang-ju city was surveyed. The questionnaires were used to collect the data on children’s peer victimization, maternal behaviors, children’s self-esteem. The results were as follows: 1. Maternal child-rearing behaviors significantly influenced children’s peer victimization. 2. Self-esteem significantly affected the direct and the indirect victimization while school achievement affected the direct and the indirect victimization. 3. Multiple regression analysis showed that the direct victimization was explained by sex, self-esteem and school achievement and that the indirect victimization by self-esteem, school achievement and sex.
