The Present Situation of Korean Wedding Costume Market and It’s Design Analysis

In Korea, western style wedding dress was introduced in the late 1950s and became a general wedding suit. However, wedding dress markets are still following old traditions which adhere to X-shaped silhouette and surface decoration. So that, wedding dress designs were not satisfied by young consumer’s needs. The purpose of this research is to identify Korean wedding dress market today and to analysis wedding dress design from 1997 to 2003. The result as follows: today wedding dress business is very successful but they don’t try to develope the wedding dress design and system. Designs were simply copied and followed in other designer’s footsteps. The analysis of design is classified to 3 section - silhouette, trimming & detail, fabric, X-shaped silhouette was dominated from the first period(1997~1999), but second period(1999~2003) was shown A-line and H-line silhouette. Trimming & detail was used abundantly, especially Rococo style trimming-ribbon, ruffle, frill and corsage etc. - was prevailed in the first period, but with time the surface decoration was reduced. Fabric was used mainly organza, satin, lace in the first period, later fabric was changed to heavier one-mikado silk, jaquard, 2 layered fabric etc.
