지역 R&D의 발전을 통한 지역발전 전략의 가능성을 서부경남지역의 사례를 중심으로 검토하는 것이 이 논문의 주된 내용이다 서부경남 지역 산업 중 진주의 기계산업은 다소 발전하였다고 볼 수 있고, 사전은 우리나라 우주항공산업의 중심지이다. 하지만 전체적으로 보아서는 대체로 낙후된 수준이며, 여전히 농업인구가 많다 서부경남의 R&D 역량은 진주와 사전지역에 거의 집중되어 있으며, 지역 산업체의 요구를 충족시키기에는 크게 부족하다고 할 수 없다. 지역 R&D역량 강화는 즉각적으로는 대학에서의 역량 강화에 크게 의존해야 하는데, 현재 가용한 대학 내의 R&D 역량의 최대한 발현을 위해서는 연구단위 및 대학 전체에서의 리더십의 역할이 중요함을 역설하였다.

The possibility of the regional development strategy through regional R&D is reviewed with special reference to western GyeongNam Province. On the whole the level of regional industry in western GyeongNam Province is somewhat backward and the proportion of agrarian population is higher than the national average, though machine industry in Jinju city is a bit developed and Sacheon city is the center of space-aero industry in Korea. R&D manpower in this region is concentrated in Jinju and Sacheon city, especially at local universities. It is estimated that much of local industrial needs for R&D could be met with this region’s R&D capacities. For the strengthening of R&D capabilities of universities, the importance of leadership power in research units and whole university is emphasized.
